CURE Update - Bryan's Story

We are so thankful for the work of our beneficiaries and are grateful that we can help support the impact they are making around the world.  Cure International is no exception.  We have the privilege of supporting the Cure Hospital located in the Dominican Republic this year. They are transforming children with life changing surgeries.  Our work is funding surgery costs for those that cannot afford treatment and specifically working with the Clubfoot program.  We can't wait to share with you Bryan's story today - one example of how your partnership with Kershaw's Challenge is changing lives around the world!

Most of the kids we meet at CURE Dominican Republic have had a long journey to healing: multiple hospitals, lots of dead ends, and more rejection than any child should have to face.

Thankfully, this was not Bryan’s experience.

As soon as Bryan’s mom, Nancy, realized his knee was turning significantly inward, she took him to the hospital. He was referred to CURE by the first doctor he saw and was scheduled for surgery with us soon after.

His friends and family have been supportive, which is a gift; usually, kids with physical disabilities like Bryan’s endure a lot of bullying. Bryan struggled with some fears of his own, though. He was afraid that if he ate too much, his condition would get worse and he wouldn’t be able to walk. When he came to CURE, our doctors encouraged him that this was not the case.

Prior to the complication with his knee, Bryan had always been healthy. He dreams of one day becoming a doctor… or maybe a professional baseball player! So even though he was a little bit disappointed to spend his summer vacation in bed recovering from surgery, he knows it’s for the best so that someday, he can pursue his big dreams.

Bryan and Nancy had a great experience at the hospital; Bryan noted that it far exceeded his expectations and that the food was delicious! (We agree with him there… our kitchen staff in the DR makes some pretty incredible meals!) Most importantly, Bryan and Nancy had an opportunity to hear the gospel and both decided to accept Jesus as Savior.

We praise God for the healing that has happened for Bryan and Nancy, both physically and spiritually!

Ping Pong 4 Purpose

Thursday, July 27th is a night that continues to replay in our minds! What an incredible night! Our 5th annual PingPong4Purpose event was a true success and we are grateful to all who made it a success. It takes a village to pull off this type of event and our team knocked it out of the park (pun intended). Let us paint you a little picture of the night....

It was a perfect LA night--great temperature, perfect conditions for a night on the field of Dodger Stadium. Our friends with the Dodgers pulled out all the stops to make our event run without a hitch. Guests, celebrities and players entered the stadium from center field and were immediately greeted with a fun and buzzing "Blue Carpet" entrance for interviews and media. The party continued onto the field where guests were greeted with an awesome event set-up. Food trucks lined the warning track. Tables, bars and seating filled the infield. And of course the ping pong tables!

We can't say enough about our incredible sponsors! Everyone played such an important and unique roll. We want to make sure they know how deeply grateful we are for the partnership! A HUGE thank you to our friends and sponsors:

The Los Angeles Dodgers, American Airlines, Levi's, UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital, Killerspin.  Additional sponsors and support include TOMS, Papa John's Pizza, Goldman Sachs, Art of the Game, Security Benefit, Diageo, Don Julio, Johnnie Walker, Ketel One, Deutsche Bank Wealth Management, iHeartMedia, Under Armour, Budweiser, Classic Party Rentals, The Vanity Project, Hidden Garden Flower Design, Sugarfina, Lounge Appeal, SJM Radio, Westin Bonaventure, MS Event Production, Sprinkles, Diaper Dude, Unity Jets, Spectrum, TopSpin, Blue Prints, and 505 Food Truck LA, Crispy Cuban, Fettes Schwein, Go Fusion Grill, Rice Balls of Fire, Pink Taco, Yao Family Wines.

The evening kicked off with a program, hosted by our emcee and friend, Jimmy Kimmel. He even brought his cute daughter up on stage with him! Jimmy has been a great friend to KC--we are so grateful for his support! We were also thrilled to welcome Magic Johnson to the event. Ellen and Clayton honored him with the Kershaw's Challenge Impact Award for his incredible work through the Magic Johnson Foundation.

The player and celebrity Ping Pong tournament kicked off after the program. Heated matches were happening at every table and culminated at the championship round. A huge congrats to our friend Mike and his tournament partner on the awesome win!

At the end of the event, the true winners of the event are the precious kids that we get to serve through CURE International in the Dominican Republic and the Dream Center in Los Angeles. This night was for them. It is our deepest honor to support these incredible beneficiaries and the children and family that they serve. We are grateful to everyone who played a part in making 2017 PP4P a success!  We can't wait for next year!

Back to School Bash with the Dream Center, Los Angeles

Kershaw's Challenge was thrilled to once again partner with the Dream Center in Los Angeles for their annual Back to School Bash.  The Dream Center is an incredible organization with an impactful mission: “Reconnecting isolated people to God and a community of support by providing human services that address immediate and long-term needs in the areas of homelessness, hunger relief, medical care and education.”

You can read more about our incredible partners at the Dream Center here -

Last Saturday the Dream Center put together an incredible Back to School Bash where 2,500 children received new backpacks filled with school supplies!  The day started early with many families lining up to enjoy the festivities.

It is important to Clayton and Ellen that their children are a part of the work of Kershaw's Challenge.  It was a joy to watch their daughter Cali participate in handing out backpacks to all the kids.

The families enjoyed a carnival style party with games, bounce houses, face painting, and a petting zoo.

Kershaw's Challenge was grateful for the support of UCLA and Papa John's Pizza who participated with us at the event.  Thank you so much for your support of Kershaw's Challenge and the Dream Center!

There was even a booth providing free back to school haircuts.

What a successful event!  Thank you to everyone who came together to provide such wonderful support for so many children heading back to school next month.
